Domestic Violence is a broad term that typically includes, intimate partner violence (stalking, psychological, sexual, and physical violence between current or former intimate partners), elder abuse (negligent or intentional acts which cause harm), and child abuse (neglect, physical harm, sexual violence, and emotional harm).
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is common. According to the CDC, about 41% of women and 26% of men report being impacted by experiences with IPV during their lifetime.
1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men report having experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
IPV starts early and continues throughout people’s lives. About 16 million women and 11 million men who reported experiencing sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner said that they first experienced these forms of violence before the age of 18.
Intimate partner violence alone affects more than 12 million people every year.
The CDC reports that approximately 1 in 7 children experience child abuse and/or neglect each year.
Regarding elder abuse, at least 1 out of 10 adults over the age of 65 suffers from at least one type of abuse.
